So how does a lock work?

When I first started learning to pick locks, this gif was very helpful in wrapping my mind around what a key is doing.

So the point is, to get the break in each pin even with the cylinder.

It’s a little harder than just sticking every pin half way up though. The same way a key has different heights along it, the pins have their break at different heights.

When picking a lock you are essentially guessing the height of each pin until it clicks in to place as shown below.

Great, question! You’re very astute!

In your lock pick kit you’ll see an L shaped tool. That is called a torque wrench.

Stick the short end of the torque wrench into the cylinder and apply pressure in the direction the key would go. That way when you get a pin in the perfect position, the cylinder will rotate just enough catch the top half and keep it there just as the animation above shows.

There are a couple of different tools in your lock pick kit. They all have slightly different uses but you can get the job done with pretty much any of them.

How to Use your Lock Pick Kit

I recommend using the wave shaped (above) tool and sticking it all the way in and then doing what’s called “scraping the pins” and applying upward pressure and pulling out. That way you will get 1 or 2 right off the bat without having to work too hard. After that, use the long hook tool like used in the gif above to get any remaining.

I’ve found that I get the best results when I start at the back pin and work my way forward. When you get a pin you will feel a very small click, that means it’s stuck. Make sure you continue to apply pressure the whole time though so the pin does not fall back down!

Once you have all of the pins in place, the torque on the cylinder will spin it open, and WALA! You’ve officially picked a lock!

The transparent lock in your lock pick set is a great practice tool to get a feel for the pins. It will be easy to do looking at the pins, so just make sure your are paying attention to how it feels. Once you get that a couple times try it with your eyes closed. Then eventually with padlocks you have lying around the house, bedroom doors or the locked dictionary we sent. The more locks you can get the more natural it will feel… Let us know if you have any specific questions about the tools or methods we’ve talked about in the comments below.
